As in the rest of Asia, the spotlight of any Indonesian meal is rice. Steamed or boiled rice complements duck, chicken, goat, beef, pork, vegetables and seafood cooked in various styles. The Indonesian approach to cooking: stir-fried, deep fried, boiled, steamed, braised, grilled over coconut husks, and roasted. What gives Indonesian food its distinctive taste? Spices! Chilis, peanuts, coconut, ginger, garlic, basil, saffron, lemon grass, shallots, cardamon, nutmeg, tamarind, shrimp paste, turmeric and many more. Local delicacies are ‘Sate’ (spears of small pieces of beef, chicken, prawns, and pork) charcoal-grilled and served with peanut sauce. ‘Gado-Gado’ is a half-boiled mix of an assortment of veggies with peanut sauce. ‘Nasi Goreng’ is an appetizing fried rice mixed with meat or shrimps. To lessen the spicy aftertaste, most foreigners go for the local Bintang beer. Other popular brands include Carlsberg, Anker, San Miguel and Bali Hai beer.
