Historical places of interest

Batubulan
Because of its fame as Bali’s center for stone carving, the roadsides in the village of Batubulan are obviously lined with stone figures. Gods and demons are carved from sandstone. They’re intended for use in houses and temples or just positioned before entrances and road junctions.

Besakih
The “Mother Temple of Bali”. Located on the slopes of Mount Agung, it is the most immense and holiest of all temples in Bali. The vision of the temple against the backdrop of Mount Agung is quite ethereal.

Goa Gajah
Goa Gajah or elephant cave was built in the 11th century as a monastery for meditation. Excavations revealed a place for bathing with six sculptures of goddesses bearing water urns.

Goa Lawah
A unique temple outside a cave sheltering thousands of bats. Hence the name Goa Lawah (bat cave). The cave reaches all the way to the base of Mount Agung.

Kerta Gosa
The Kerta Gosa (Royal Court of Justice) ceilings highlights murals painted in traditional wayang style. A memento of its past glory can be seen in the gardens, floating pavilion and lotus ponds.

Taman Ayun
Located in Mengwi, Taman Ayun is the second largest temple complex in Bali. It stands on land enclosed by a wide moat. You will find the stone-carved gate at its entrance to be truly impressive.

Tanah Lot
This 16th century temple is one of Bali’s foremost coastal temples. It is erected atop a massive rock outcrop in the sea. It is possible to walk up to the temple at low tide. The best time to view Tanah Lot is during sunset.

Tenganan
One of the earliest Bali Aga villages where traditions have barely changed over the centuries.
